SAYING GOODBYE
Dear Danny
It's me, Emma. Your sister. I just wanted to tell you that I miss you so much and I hope that you’re okay. Back home in London we're alright, just thinking of you and all the other brave soldiers. You’re the best brother a girl can have, really. You can't imagine how much mom misses you. She cries herself to sleep almost every night. Please write back soon, and let me and mom know if you’re alright. See you soon. Love you loads and loads. Bye.

Emma Jones is a 14 year old girl, living in London. Her family moved to London from Bolton, when Emma was only 5 years old, so they’ve been living there for a while. Emma got blonde curly hair, and blue eyes. And her face is also covered in freckles, like the rest of her family. Her older brother, Danny is 19 years old, and is now in the army. He's in the war in Iraq. Danny got brown hair, covering his blue eyes.
The year was 2003, and the date was 24th of December. Emma was sitting in her room, looking out at the rain falling down, hitting the new washed window. She was sitting in her bed, looking through the photo album, and there she saw pictures of her and Danny, back in Bolton. She laughed and dried her face as a tear fell from the corner of her eye. The salty tear hit the old picture. She missed her brother so much, it was hurting her inside. Danny and Emma lost their dad one year before they moved to London. Their mom thought they needed a new start, another place than Bolton. "Emma, come downstairs it's dinner" her mom screamed up the stairs. Emma closed the album and walked over to the door. She turned off the light and looked around her room. The room was as black as the hole in her heart was. "Here you go sweetheart" Emmas mom, Sara said, giving her the plate. "Thank you mom" Emma said, sitting down next to her in the sofa. They turned the TV on and watched some cartoons.
It was now the 20th of March 2004, and the war had been going on for one year. Emma and Sara hadn't heard anything from Danny for the past months, and were getting really worried. One day they were looking at the TV when suddenly an extra news report came on. "It has just been known that 1000 American soldiers have been killed in Iraq. Almost 1/3 of the soldiers were London boys, from 18-21 years old." the news lady said. Emma looked up at her mother who were sitting behind her. She was holding her hand over her mouth, tears running down her face. "It.. It can't be Danny" She almost whispered. Emma looked back at the TV and hoped it wasn't Danny. She seriously couldn't live without her brother. "Why.. Why do it have to be war? Why do people need to go away from their families and down to kill another family? It's not right" Emma then thought. After the news, Emma and Sara went to bed, but Emma couldn't sleep. She was just lying in her bed, looking at the roof. And then she heard her mother in her room, crying. "Please bring Danny home safe" Emma prayed, looking out the window. The moon were up, and shining down at the river Thames. The sky were filled with stars. Emma had always thought that, every time someone got killed, they became a star and went up there, to protect their families. Then Emma heard a terrible knock on the door. She flew up from her bed and walked over to the stairs. Her mom had already got down there, and where standing in the door, in her bathrobe. Emma sat down in the stairs, holding a picture of Danny in her arms. She tried to see who it was, but her mom were standing in the way. Then suddenly Sara started crying, and broke down. Then Emma knew. Emma knew she had lost her big brother. Eyes stared filling up, as she heard the words of Danny, the last time she saw him. "I love you Emma. You and mom are the most important people in my life, remember that". Emma ran down and went over to her mom and hugged her. Sara held her only child, around her waist, tight. She was so afraid of losing her too. "He.. He can't be dead, Emma. He just can't be" she said, into Emma's shoulders. Emma cried and cried and couldn't believe what had just happened..
Now a week later, Danny's funeral was on the 27th of March 2004. Emma were standing in her black dress, in her room. She was looking in the mirror. Her blonde hair, was now straight and not curly. Her eyes had no more life in them, and her cheeks were wet from all her tears. She was looking around her room. All the pictures of her and her brother, Danny. They had gone through so much together. Their loss of a father, all of their birthdays, Emma and Danny's first kiss. They told each other everything. Sara, Emma's mom and Emma pulled up, where the funeral was going to be held. Emma looked out the window and saw all the people standing there, crying. Emma looked around and saw Danny's three best mates, Tom, Harry and Dougie. Emma jumped out of the car and ran over to them. They looked at her, and smiled. But Emma could see they had been crying, but was just putting on a brave smile for her.
After 15 minutes, the funeral was going to start. Emma knew how much Danny loved the ocean, so she had asked her mom if they could have the funeral outside on a hill. It was Emma's turn to talk. She stepped up from her seat and went over to Danny's coffin. It felt like hours, days, worlds apart. In her hand she was holding a red single rose, and a letter. Tears were falling as she saw Danny's face lying there, looking up at the sky. His eyes were shut, no one could see those beautiful blue eyes. Emma took one big breathe before turning around, looking at all of the people.
" 2,824 American soldiers have been named dead or reported dead. 20,887 have been wounded. Danny was one of them. He was only 20 years old. He had his whole life ahead of him. He always wanted to be a singer." Emma said, laughing a little bit, looking over at her brother lying there, before continuing. "Danny was the most.. the most beautiful person in the world. He was so kind to people, and always helped them when they needed help. Remember Danny? Remember all the good times we had? When I had been heart broken by Jason and you came into my room and sang me a song? Or when our dad died, you were there for both me and mom. Danny you were the best brother a girl could have. I'm never going to forget you, Danny. You'll always stay in my heart, that's where you belong. I’m going to miss that you always where there to protect me. You never let anyone hurt me. I'm going to miss your laugher, your smile, your stupid accent." Emma said, and the people sitting there, laughed. " Basically I'm going to miss my big brother. But I know you'll always be here, watching over me. I love you Danny, for always and always" Emma then said, putting down the red rose on his lifeless chest. A tear fell down, and hit him on the nose. She smiled and stood up. Then she saw him. Danny, standing back in the crowd, smiling. She couldn't believe it. He was actually standing there. Emma smiled, and Danny nodded before slowly drifting away. "Bye Danny" Emma whispered, and she knew she would always have Danny with her, in her heart, her mind and her soul.
